Face to Face with Facebook as I reach out to the Kurdish community
before coming to Edinburgh. Communications are ALL Facebook. From
Facebook pages I message to connect with Kurds in Scotland, to the
international coordination with UK activists via Fbook messenger that
brought 1,500 hits to my site in less than 24 hours, to a meeting with
Kurdish activists in Harvard Square today where the only question about
how to connect with me was - "Tell me your name so I can find you on
Facebook. (Scrolling through phone) Oh I see you - we already have three
friends in common!" It is powerful in ways I never realized before. For
these people who have been repressed and controlled for so long, it is
truly a revolution.Diane Edgecomb - livingmyth.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03273193256329732759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711199125706378784.post-29011294132068653382017-06-05T15:23:00.003-07:002017-06-05T15:23:47.288-07:00Twilight Time

<span style="font-family: "merriweather" , "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">At this time of year, I'm strongly aware of the beauty of twilight. In the book, Seven Arrows, which speaks of the deep culture of the Cheyenne, the sunset direction of west gives the gift of introspection. And I do feel that deep quiet when watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon.

For painters and photographers as well as for ancient cultures, twilight is a sacred betwixt and between time when we see things in a special way. At this transition time between day and night the landscape and all its creatures are touched by beauty. Transition times the old legends tell us are when magic can happen! It is a doorway time when fairies appear and other forces can enter. From a practical point of view, if you look at any of the major transitions that happen in our lives you can see that those transition times ARE when we are most open to change and the chance that something new might enter is truly possible.

Our Storytelling and Music journeys in the landscape happen at twilight for this exact reason! You can feel so much in the liminal light. That is why painters loved it - the stretching shadows the "glow" of the divine around everything.

At our annual In the Groves performance in the Arnold Arboretum of Boston on June 16th and 17th 2017, we take the audience down pathways and into several different groves of protected trees during these magical twilight hours.

Join us - we will be there to welcome you...
Imagine a concise and pithy story that sheds light on the repeatable and fairly
predictable failings of humankind. If you then imagine that, so that no one can
possibly take offence, those tales have animals or inanimate objects as the
main characters, you have imagined FABLES! Whether they are traditional fables
passed on in the oral tradition or literary fables written by a single author,
they share a common ability to serve the needs of their current masters: those
who would adapt them to suit the times we live in.

My first adaptation of a fable was Aesop’s: “The Tortoise and the Hare.” I had
been searching for a family story that would encourage slow readers to believe
that they were as important as those who sped through books. I found the
framework for my story in that classic tale. My version had the rabbit
literally tripping over the tortoise in the road, berating it for being a Rock.
And, because I have a deep aversion to our consumer driven society that keeps
us rushing from store to store, from sale to sale, my rabbit trips because he is
so focused on the next SALE, he doesn’t even see what is in front of him! The
tortoise was just there, in the road, pulled into his shell and happily reading.
But reading what? Letters, of course!! The rabbit is disdainful of this,
showing off how he reads and speeding through the words, sentences and
paragraphs in the same book, but the rabbit reads so fast that, much to the
children’s delight, he misses the part about the ice cream! When the race between
the two does begin, it is a race to the library- whomever wins gets a library
card from the librarian! Though the tortoise wins (the rabbit was too busy signing
autographs) we do find out that at the library, everybody is a winner-
librarians give library cards to us all. The characters were a delight to improvise with and embody.
Clearly drawn and with a situation that has captured the imagination for so
many years I had the best Material to work with, for aren’t these time-honored satirical
tales from another century material to stitch and re-stitch?

At the Sharing the Fire storytelling conference this March, I’ll
be taking those in my workshop on a wild and wooly exploration of the riches
fables can yield. We’ll improvise with these “fabulous” characters and
situations shining the light of satirical fun on the world we live in. We’ll even
experiment with devices like rhyme to see how limiting ourselves to a “form” can
yield surprising results. Aesop used his own stories to educate his audiences about the foibles and
politics of his time. With all to comment on these days, I can’t wait to see
what we come up with at my “Fun with Aesop’s Fables” workshop at the Northeast Storytelling Conference: Sharing The Fire this year!

We all try to do our part. But what if our part was as heartfelt and simple as the psychic space of Gratitude.

Since Thanksgiving I have been thinking about it a lot... How do we express gratefulness? How do we experience it?

The most important thing gratitude brings to me is the experience of Relationship. This gratitude is not at all "General Thanks!" That idea is vague and does not create the experience of relationship. it is when realizing and expressing thanks for a specific creature, place or moment that I feel the presence of the "other" and the gentle space that they take in this world.

Offering thanks is an offering that is ongoing. My family acknowledged it while gathering around a table and before partaking of the food - giving thanks. Here is to the hope that Thanks Giving can be a bit more private - and definitely ongoing.

We do have an important place at the table. Let us give Thanks! #thanksgiving #gratitude #nature #blackswallowtailbutterfly
As the constellation Virgo rises this September so does the story of
Astrae ~ the Greek goddess who felt such compassion for humanity. Her
tears transformed became a gift to humanity of the lovely Asters whose
name means "star." For my Language of Flowers performances this fall I
will be telling this myth for the first time. I was rewarded with breathtaking sights and lovely audiences - including telling tales by a campfire just before a break with s'mores. The Appalachian Mountain Club hosted me at Pinkham Notch and at Highland Lodge and Newagen Seaside Inn in Maine showed that they know the importance of storytelling. As one fireside boy who is a regular at the Inn said to me, "This is my favorite part of coming here.... well also the Clambake!" A sunset walk from the Inn led Tom and I to discover a plaque dedicated to Rachel Carson. May we all rededicate ourselves to treasuring and being caretakers for the natural life all around us.
Five of my best performances in repertory! Whew!! I call it the
Storytelling Olympics! The Center has a sweet cottage for the tellers to
stay in and a tradition is to leave some goodies behind! So I got to
sample microwave popcorn for the first time - bravely sallying on past
warning labels for a late night snack - and washed up with Goat's milk
and lavender soap! We tellers really do encompass quite a range!! I
loved trying to figure out who left what!!! I left my favorite new pasta
sauce: Rao's Tomato and Basil and a Sam Adam's Beer from my home town
of Boston! A MEDITATION ON NATURE MYTHS

You don’t often hear, ‘Wow, I heard a really cool nature myth today!’
You probably won’t hear, ‘Did I tell you the one about how the Evergreens came to be?’ at the neighborhood bar. They may not be the most popular narratives these days but I say that
Nature Myths* are the most sorely missed. So much missed that we have
forgotten what they once taught us to know.

One thing they taught us is that we belong to the land, as much if
not more than it belongs to us. One of the reasons we have lost that sense is that, over the years, the old stories
that rooted our imaginations in the landscape have been shredded by
assimilation and modernization. We have continued to travel further and
further from that Eden, from the feeling that we are in a unified place.
We are faced more and more with things we do not know how to process,
in terms that are alien to our soul. Mythology, revisited and
reinvigorated, can still be a deeply orienting narrative. Myths speak in
the archetypal language of dreams and meaning, encouraging us to
suspend disbelief and to wonder as a child does at the marvel that is
our world.

I've worked with nature mythology for all of my life as a
storyteller, plumbing its depths for Seasonal Celebrations, Stories in
the Landscape, explorations of specific natural elements like trees and
flowers and more. What I find is that these old stories always challenge
me to think more deeply about a creature or plant or celestial body.
When I am outdoors, those tales accompany me – encouraging meditative
thoughts on the natural world and revealing each plant or insect in a
new way. Sometimes I feel as though surrounding a natural element with a
myth is like gifting it with a new perfume!

For me now, these old stories clothe the world, drawing my
imagination closely to it. Truth be known, that is why I began the
search. Feeling alienated from the natural world when I grew up and
stopped building forts and running through the pastureland and became a
responsible adult, I wanted more than ever to find a way and a reason to
have nature still be my constant companion. Exploring nature myths has
been a ‘way’ for me and my wish is to bring my discoveries to others.

Whenever someone says to me after hearing a myth on roses, “I will
never see a rose in the same way again.” I know the right chord has
sounded. What they mean when they say ‘see’ is ‘experience.’
The Australian Aborigines call the time of myth the Dreamtime. One of
their tribes has a beautiful saying: “It’s true that we need the earth,
but that is not the whole story. The earth needs us. It needs to hear
the laughter of our children. It needs to hear the pounding of feet to
the rhythm of the dance and it needs to hear the old stories told in a
sacred manner.”

Does the earth need to hear the ancient stories? I say YES, it needs
to hear them and so do we need to be tied back to them as we were “in
the beginning time.”

We are such an important element of nature. Better weavers than the
spiders. Our myths were designed to weave our intangible imagination
into the fabric in such a way that we ourselves could be caught in
delight, suspended in wonder and meaning.
Can you imagine that?

* By Nature Myths I am referring to ancient stories of origin that
tell how elements in nature came to be, including Nature Mythologies
where natural forces are personified.
We are at single digit weather here in Boston and Jack Frost put the frosting on our icy
Valentine's cake by creating dancing, starry patterns that glitter in the sun. He disguised his signature as a Cupid's
arrow sweeping through the fun from upper right to down left! Thanks Jack!
I am totally star-struck by you!!

You have to look hard to see it and in truth he does not Always sign his work. But lately I have discovered the telltale marks. A dashing line at the bottom of some of his finest etchings. It is not a scribble such as doctors are said to make when they hastily scrawl their names. No! It is a DASH - a long one----- as in Dashing! I think Jack is pleased that I found it. Jack Frost- Second Installment! I am still in search of him, who he is and where is he from.... He is the most eloquent of artists with crystal tipped brush and the swiftest most delicate strokes. His laughter crackles as though the thinnest layer of ice is breaking. For aeons he studied the world of nature. Tracing every shape in silver and in the process opening our eyes to every natural SHAPE. But I believe that his greatest joy came when we created windows. For at that moment we gave him his canvases - a place to create his original work.

This morning he did a quick sketch of himself on my dining room window, well at least a sketch of his clothing and his long and winding hat! You can see the hat twining up the left middle of the window. Curiously he left his face blank. Does that mean that he is invisible? Or is it that he prefers to remain anonymous? Ah, Jack, the search continues...
Who is Jack Frost?? I've been wondering for some time. A few days ago Jack's first winter paintings appeared on our windows and I marveled at this dexterous and obviously brilliant A.D.D. artist. I began writing about him, imagining his crackly laugh that sounds like the rapid shattering of the delicate ice on deeper pools. I wondered where he lived, what he looked like.

This morning I was rewarded! If I believed in magic, I might say Jack knew I was writing about him! My car was frost-designed with an intricate flowery pattern while all the other cars were a simple sheet of grey! Ah, Jack! It is going to an enjoyable hunt trying to pin you down!!
Decided to take my own advice on rambling through books to see if fortune and serendipity would smile on me. I was in downtown Boston, so entered the Boston Public Libraries lions and marble staircase up to the research wing of the BPL trying to find my way to the "hidden stacks." The hidden stacks of books that you must call up into the light of day. I've long wanted to peruse the Ethnographic studies of the folktales and folklore of the Native American people- I know they are in the "stacks!" I was sent along from info desk to info desk - like hearing from the Doormen in the Wizard of Oz... deeper and deeper into the heart of the research area and then catapulted out into some other unusual area, led by the whispers of polka dotted librarians, past the research books on folktales and folklore. And finally, after scooping up a travel book that I hope will lead me to the Monarch migration in Mexico I found two writers who spoke to me. Nan Phifer's "Writing your Spiritual Autobiography" (she takes prompts to such an articulate level) and Thomas Moore "The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life." His writings on sacred space and nature were immediately close to my heart. When a book is well-written it is like meeting a kindred spirit who can shed light on your search and companion you in your work.Diane Edgecomb - livingmyth.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03273193256329732759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711199125706378784.post-65465957928760136562015-12-31T09:48:00.001-08:002015-12-31T09:50:01.381-08:00New Year's Synchronisity!A few years ago I had a "First Night" storytelling event where I wanted to tell not just any story but at least one story specifically related to our current New Year's Eve. I had never recalled seeing anything like that and was pretty sure I wouldn't find something old and traditional considering the relative "newness" of this focus on January 1st being the New Year. Still I went in search- the old fashioned way!!

Thinking to myself that perhaps I would find the right story if I let my "fingers do the walking," I went over to my bookcase of collections of traditional tales. Ran my fingers over the volumes I had perused so many times, finally lingering over "A Thorn in the King's Foot: Scottish Traveling Tales." I pulled out the book, closed my eyes and opened the book to the story "Auld Father Time and the Henwife" the only traditional New Year's tale I have seen before and since! In it Father Time grows younger and younger till at last he is a baby! Truly a New Year's story with the archetypes we associate with the New Year. The old man and the baby.

Carl Jung said, "The greatest number of spontaneous synchronistic phenomena I have observed have a direct connection with an archetype."
And doesn't it though! Soul, character, life, years of being stirred of being handled. As a storyteller in the internet age I say, "Soul resides in books," and I want to encourage tellers to still look for stories there. Grow their collections- don't give up that path. When we search for our stories via internet or through a storytelling email group we are asking for the stories in order to fulfill a topic or a need. Already we have prepared the wrapping, the binding that may keep the story from saying what it truly would like to say to us. In that way, what we find may not give us what we need, even though it is a need-based search! 'I need a story that teaches violence prevention.' or 'I need a story that I can use from the Chinese culture.' The search then takes place with that lens in mind and on internet sites where the stories are splayed and displayed and digitally categorized. If you are lucky, the stories will still have some earth clinging to them, there will be notes about the sources and more variations you can track down. But I still believe in looking for stories over decades, 'book-hunting' in barns, cast-off collections at yard sales and finding stories in random odd places. Turning them over in the hand and then the mind and wondering what they might hold. What they are saying...who warmed them with their breath over time? "Soul Resides in Books."
Had shows at Boston museums this weekend, visiting them for the first
time. On the USS Constitution, families scrambled down tiny stairs to
the bottom deck (not seen in this photo!) for my Halloween stories where the ceilings were so low I
kept catching my witches hat on the beams. Answer: The witch becomes ever more and more stooped! My Golden Thread workshops will be drawing on what I have learned in over thirty years of experience working with traditional stories, bringing them to life for a variety of audiences. In the course of this work I've studied a variety of writers and thinkers. Historians of religion, anthropologists, Jungian scholars and whenever possible listening to the voices of the indigenous- those who grew up in the old ways.

By now my approach to traditional tales is deeply intuitive. When I enter a sacred area, like that of myth, I truly feel I am entering a very particular world with certain rules and possibilities of expression. The same is true with fairy tales, animal fables and legends each have their own rules and their secrets are best unlocked by following a certain path. Their classifications are important only so much as they are sign posts pointing the way to the proper approach. When you revive a fairy tale you do not treat it in the same way as a myth. You would not approach a queen in the same way as a shepherdess!

Now I want to help others discover the unbelievable depth that can be found in these old tales- thus this series of workshops called The Golden Thread: Finding Meaning in Traditional Tales. Each workshop series focuses on a different kind of traditional tale. The first journeys have been into the landscape of fairy tales. To deepen the work with fairy tales I have taken cues from dream analysis, amplification of symbols, Michael Chekov's gestural work and cultural explorations. The tellings that have resulted from the classes so far has been extraordinary.
My teacher and inspiration was the late Zbigniew Cynkutis, one of the founding members of the ground-breaking Polish Laboratory Theatre. He once said, "We train so that when the moment arises we can find something new instead of following the path of what we know already."

Training has always been such an important part of my growth as an artist. I believe it is essential to continue to find ways to deepen and further the craft.

In my work on traditional tales, I am doing extensive reading on fairytales. Iona and Peter Opie's "The Classic Fairytales" is my book of choice right now. This book contains "the core of Fairytale literature." The stories within are the carefully researched and hard to find first versions of these tales. This packed volume contains extensive background not only on each tale but on the development of the fairytale itself. All of this is in preparation for my upcoming workshop in re-telling a fairytale, "The Golden Thread: finding meaning in traditional tales," a five evenings series beginning October 7th at Dancing Tree Storytelling Workshop in Needham, MA

On August 29th and 30th I will be taking an intensive two-day workshop in the Roy Hart Vocal Work. It is always a special treat to continue to learn, explore and, in this case, revisit techniques and challenges you have encountered in the past. Link teaching with learning. They go hand in hand.Diane Edgecomb - livingmyth.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03273193256329732759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711199125706378784.post-30663958615838573752015-07-25T08:58:00.000-07:002017-03-01T13:41:54.700-08:00Flowers and PresenceWhile working on my newest performance: The Language of Flowers* I spent hours pouring over volumes of myths and folktales about flowers that tell of their origins and their meaning. The work sensitized me to the unique qualities of each flowering plant. Because they were created to reflect the true essence of each plant, myths of origin in particular opened up the doors of perception. Now when I see these flowers, the stories surround them like an ethereal fragrance helping me to go deeper into the experience of each plant.
Bringing them in the house to be with me when I work allows me to let them companion me through the day- a lovely contemplation. Today the delicate white spray of the cilantro and yesterday spicy, sweet geranium blossoms.

* The performance title refers to the Victorian custom of endowing every flower with a specific meaning. Daisies-innocence, Red Rose- passionate love etc.., Deciphering a bouquet using one of the many "Language of Flowers" booklets in circulation revealed the hidden messages.Diane Edgecomb - livingmyth.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03273193256329732759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2711199125706378784.post-52742747310547347332015-07-22T12:48:00.003-07:002017-03-01T13:36:59.343-08:00Meeting the cultural representative of the Kurdistan Regional Governmnet

Had a wonderful meeting with Najat Abdullah - cultural representative for the Kurdistan Regional Government in the U.S. when I was in Washington DC this week. He is
100% behind the Kurdish story collection project. http://livingmyth.com/about/projects/a-fire-in-my-heart/
Now to find other groups and other support. My vision is a pan-Kurdish
story collecting effort with an internet based platform to upload
videos, curated by Kurdish scholars from the four different dialects.
Loved the moment when I said to Najat: "I have a crazy idea." and he
responded, "I love crazy ideas, t hat is the way to dream big!"
Nature is so alive at this time of year not just with the emergence of butterflies but with the return of the birds - trees budding - people out n about! It's just heavenly!!

We celebrate this time of natural beauty with an annual outdoor performance event that weaves through the groves of Boston's only tree sanctuary, the Arnold Arboretum.

The performance, called "IN THE GROVES," is an evocative story and music journey taking place on June 19th and June 20th, the time of the Summer Solstice. To make the event truly special we limit our audience size to only thirty.

Hope to see you there....
I had seen the female black swallowtail last August as it lingered by my fennel plant- not knowing why it was on fennel that had no blossoms I did some research and realized fennel (along with parsley and dill) is one of the host plants to the caterpillars. Much later - after keeping an eye out for it- the caterpillar was large enough to recognize and I took it in to offer it what protection and hospitality I could.

This youngster would eat only fennel. Fennel and fennel and more fennel. Raising itself up on its hind legs it guided the delicate, anise scented fronds to its mouth.

Finally late in the fall it went into pupae state emerging on Sunday, May 10th to my surprise and delight. Since then I have seen it twice in my backyard checking out the yard and hopefully noticing that, earlier than ever before, I have planted large fennel plants hoping for another guest this year. Guess you could say I don't have a butterfly garden I have one for caterpillars.

Here is a short video of the black swallowtail one day old on the back porch before I set it free.
